RESTHAVEN CEMETERY TOUR
On June 13, a group of 49 people took part in the eleventh annual walking tour of a cemetery in west Iron County, which was held this year at Resthaven Cemetery. Participants came from Crystal Falls, Iron Mountain, downstate Cheboygan, Green Bay and St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, as well as from the local area.
Dale Safford, West Iron County’s “Cemetery Lady,” shared facts about the cemetery and stories of several people who are buried there, and also honored headstones that were the most unique, most well-tended, and most beautiful, as well as mentioning several people who lived to be over 100 years old. Also contributing were local residents who shared information about family members or other people who are buried in the cemetery. Included, left to right, were assistant Bob Weeks; Darla Sprague, who covered her mother, Ohio native Verda Barnhart; Betty Petroski, who spoke about Ottawa Lake farmer Olaf Waino; Linda Saving, who spoke about her father, Dina Mia founder Bob Scalcucci; Gary Pisoni, who talked about his parents, Leo and Mary Pisoni; Monica Fiorazo, who reported on her father “Casey” Olan; Allyce Westphal, who covered her great-uncle, businessman Matt Toti; Cheryl Spencer, who reported on her parents, Stanley and Gertrude Zielinski; Dale Safford, coordinator, who spoke about 14 additional people buried in the cemetery; Chris Shamion, who talked about her in-laws, Stanley and Margaret Shamion; Kim Stafford Benson, who talked about “Banjo Pete” Peterson; and Jan Melstrom, who reported on her father Joseph Grant. Also participating but not pictured was Fred Jacobs, who covered his great-grandparents, Julius and Annie Turoski.
The Tour was sponsored by the Iron County Genealogical Society and the Iron County Historical Society.
