End of the Year Party

Members of the Iron County Genealogical Society celebrated another good year during Christmas season with a potluck at the West Iron DistrictLibrary. Members present were: (standing, left to right) Dale Safford, Rosemary LaRoux, Betty Honold, Carol Erickson, and Mary Wurzer; (seated) NickolasTurner, Pat Turner, Liz Ponozzo, and Patti Isaacson.


RESTHAVEN CEMETERY TOUR

On June 8, a group of 60 people took part in the ninth annual walking tour of a cemetery in West Iron County, which was held this year at Resthaven Cemetery. Participants came from Crystal Falls, Iron Mountain, Midland, Grand Rapids, and Wisconsin, as well as from the local area.  Dale Safford, West Iron County's "Cemetery Lady," shared facts about the cemetery and stories of several people who are buried there, and also honored headstones that were the most unique, most unique military, most well-tended, and most beautiful. Also contributing were local residents who shared information about family members who are buried in the cemetery. Pictured left to right, they include: Kim Benson, who talked about gunshot victim John Banks, Jim Schwark, Gale Cerney, who covered murder victim Jacob Gustafson who was her step great-grandfather, Janet Fritsche, who covered her mother Mary Schwark who lived to be 101, Brian Kassa, who spoke about his grandmother Nancy Spicer who is the oldest person buried in the county at age 110, Sally Blyze, who spoke about her father Ed Marquette, Tom Brzoznowski, who talked about his grandfather Felix Brzoznowski, Betty Petroski, who spoke about her brother-in-law Leo Petroski and grandparents Andrew and Alma Kangas and uncle Jack Kangas, Dale Safford, coordinator, who spoke about 17 additional people buried in the cemetery, assistant Bob Weeks, Lorraine Meinhardt.   The tour was sponsored by the Iron County Historical Society and the Iron County Genealogical Society.

Members of the Iron County Genealogical Society gathered at the West Iron District Library for a potluck to celebrate the end of another good year in 2015. Stambaugh Cemetery Tour

On June 10, a group of 76 people took part in the eighth annual walking tour of a cemetery in West Iron County, which was held this year at Stambaugh Cemetery. Participants came from Crystal Falls, Kingsford, Ontonagon, Rapid River, Wisconsin and Illinois, as well as from the local area. Dale Safford, West Iron County's "Cemetery Lady," shared facts about the cemetery and stories of several people who are buried there. Also contributing were local residents who shared information about family members who are buried in the cemetery. Pictured left to right, they include:

Beechwood Rosehill Cemetery Tour

BEECHWOOD-On June 11, 2014, a total of 53 people took part in the seventh annual walking cemetery tour in west Iron County, held at Rosehill Cemetery in Beechwood. Participants came from Kingsford, Wisconsin, Indiana and Hawaii, as well as from the local area. Dale Safford, west Iron County's "Cemetery Lady," shared historical facts about the cemetery and stories of many people who are buried there. Also contributing were local residents who shared family heritage and genealogical information. On June 12, 2013, 61 people took part in the 6th annual walking cemetery tour in west Iron County, which was held at Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River. Participants came from as far away as Maryland, Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin, as well as from the local area. Dale Safford, west Iron County's "Cemetery Lady," shared historical facts about the cemetery and stories of many people who are buried there. Also contributing were seven local residents who shared family heritage and genealogical information. Stambaugh Cemetery Tour was Wednesday, June 13th

On June 13, 2012, 74 people took part in the 5th annual cemetery walking tour in west Iron County, which was held at Stambaugh Cemetery in Iron River. Participants came from as far away as Hawaii, Utah, Colorado, Wisconsin, and Texas, as well as from the local area. Dale Safford, west Iron County's "Cemetery Lady," shared historical facts about the cemetery and stories of many people who are buried there. Also contributing were eleven local residents who shared family heritage and genealogical information. On June 8, 2011, the 4th annual cemetery walking tour in west Iron County was held at Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River, with 51 people participating, including some coming from as far away as Texas and Hawaii. Dale Safford, Iron County's "Cemetery Lady," shared many historic facts about both the cemetery and many people buried there. Assisting her were seven local residents who shared family heritage and genealogical data.
